ImageOne of Bethlehem’s prominent artists has died after a battle with cancer. Painter and sculptor Adnan Al Zubaidi will be buried in the south-central West Bank city after noon prayers on Thursday.

Co-founder of the Association of Sculpture in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Al Zubaidi ran an artists cooperative in Jerusalem with colleagues and taught art in Bethlehem. Much of his work reflects the reality in which he lived, under occupation and the resistance to it. Israeli forces shut down several of his exhibits over the years.

Described by colleagues today as a “fighter against Israeli occupation and a solid defender of human dignity and the homeland,” Al Zubaidi is survived by his wife and four children.
